Another Day, Another Symbian Virus

Viruswarning_3Yet another Virus for Symbian based mobiles has been found. Skulls.D, disguised as a Macromedia Flash Player for the Symbian OS (File Name: Flash_1[1].1_Full_DotSiS.sis), is the latest Symbian malware doing the rounds. A variant of the original Skulls virus, this version displays a flashing full-screen image (right) in the background no matter what application the user tries to use.

Skullsd_1It also drops the Cabir.M worm which will then try and infect other mobile which are in range. However unlike the older Skulls versions, Skulls.D only disables only the applications that could be used to remove it rather than all the applications that are on the phone. F-Secure have already announced that Skulls.D can be detected by their Mobile anti-virus software and have also given instructions on how to disinfect your mobile if you pick up this virus.

Furthermore, F-Secure has also found that the Source Code for the original Cabir Worm is, as suspected, being freely distributed around the net by the 29A virus group. This probably means that we'll see many more variants of these worms in the coming weeks and months. Maybe I should start a Virus section for the site? ;)

Hi, congratulations on a great site. Particularly impressed by your stand against pirated software.

I was reading through the various articles that you have on the site regarding Symbian viruses. SimWorks, the company that I work for, has had a Symbian anti-virus product available since July '04 which has gone on to become one of the most popular mobile av products available.

I just wanted to contact you to let you know that I would be happy to make myself available to you at any time if you're writing about Symbian viruses in the future and also that we would be happy to provide you with a copy of SimWorks Anti-Virus S60 if you were interested in reviewing the product.

As an aside, SimWorks Anti-Virus has been available from SoftwareCellulari for a long time so if you're mentioning it in the future please feel free to link to it in your virtual store - no point in letting potential sales for you slip away!

Kind regards,
Aaron Davidson
