My Own Nokia 6600 Themes

I've been messing around with the Nokia Theme Editor and have created 3 new themes. None of them are particularlu great but hey its a learning curve right? Well anyway i'm posting these here for anyone who wants them:

BLUR.jpg

Blur Theme: The First, and perhaps the best, theme i made. The background is a cut from a pic i took with my 6600.

TREE.jpg

Tree Theme: An Amalgamation of diffrent pictures of trees. This theme isn't perfect.

CLOUDS.jpg

Cloud Theme: Another good theme based on pictures of clouds...better than it sounds.

I will post some screen shots of these themes soon. Till then, enjoy.

UPDATE: Have added the screen-shots...They aren't great quality though..sorry.

A Good Round-Up

The BBC have written an analysis called "After Yassin". It makes for some good reading.

Today In Palestine

Adbel Aziz Rantisi, the new head of Hamas (who has had his assets frozen by Gordon Brown), has backed off threats against the U.S. that were made by member of the movment in the aftermath of Sheikh Yassins assasination. However he still warns that there will be revenge attacks against Israeli targets. He has also acknowledged the fact that hes a marked man:

"Rantissi has already survived at least one attempt on his life and knows there's a good chance he will die like Yassin. In fact, Israel has promised to kill him... Rantissi said he knows this and would rather die in an Apache gunship attack than of a heart attack"

And it seems that the attacks have started:

A Palestinian boy is caught trying to cross a checkpoint into Isreal with a bomb strapped to his body:

"...Enter Abdu, the "boy bomber," who was stopped while walking toward the Hawara checkpoint control tower in what seemed like an unusually bulky red sweater and jeans. With Israeli soldiers issuing commands from a distance, the stocky Palestinian lad was made to strip off his sweater.

And there, in the bright March sunlight, under the full gaze of a camera crew, Israeli soldiers and Palestinian pedestrians waiting to cross the checkpoint, a heavy vest-like garment packed with explosives, estimated at 15 to 20 pounds, was revealed to the crowd..."

Three Palestinian Gunmen are killed in Gaza while attacking a checkpoint:

"Israeli troops have killed three armed Palestinians in a shootout in the Gaza Strip, Israeli military sources said. They said the gunmen were shot dead after they opened fire on an army outpost near the southern Jewish settlement of Tel Katifa."

-----------------------------
And so it starts....

Europe Doesn't Love Microsoft

After all the legal battles experienced in the U.S.A., Microsoft now has problems in Euroland. 500 Million Euros worth of problems to be exact. The European Commision is fining the company for abusing its dominance in the computer software market.

Reports:

Guardian Unlimited:EU to fine Microsoft a record €500m
BBC News: Microsoft faces 'record EU fine'

Pre-Empting The Attacks?

It seems that the Israeli Government is expecting Hamas to retaliate soon as reports are leaking that an all out attack on the Hamas leadership may be carried out before any action can be taken (From ABC NEWS):

Israel will try to kill the entire leadership of Hamas without waiting for another attack by the militant group, security sources said Tuesday, citing a decision made by Israeli security chiefs following the assassination of Hamas' founder. The killing of Sheik Ahmed Yassin on Monday threatened to escalate three and a half years of Israel-Palestinian fighting. Fearing revenge attacks, Israel beefed up security throughout the country and at its missions abroad....

...Despite the outpouring of rage, Israeli security chiefs decided during a five-hour meeting Monday to step up targeted attacks, the security sources said, speaking on condition of anonymity. They said officials decided to go after the entire Hamas leadership, without waiting for another attack by the militant group....

...Israel's army chief also suggested Tuesday that Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah could eventually be assassinated by Israel.

I seriously doubt Israel will take-out Arafat any time soon. It wouldn't be good for them not just becaue it would further enrage the Palistinians, but would cause a huge out-cry in the International Community and could possibly lead to a withdrawl of American funding and support to a certain extent. They would have very little to gain from the death of Arafat.

Nasrallah is another story. If they murder him then there won't a huge reaction from Western Countries however they would be poking the wasps nest so-to-speak. Already Hezbollah have retaliated for Sheikh Yassins death. Nasrallahs murder could possibly see Israel eventually entering a full scale war. A war that, even though they would be by far the stronger force, would be very damaging to the country and the ruling Likud party.

The bloodshed is about to get alot worse. I can feel it.

UPDATE: ABC Report is backed up by The Guardian Unlimited.

Israel will attempt to kill the entire leadership of Palestinian militant group Hamas, stepping up targeted attacks, Israeli security sources said today.

From Todays "The Independent"

At the bottom of the page a quote by the Hamas Leadership:

"Sharon has opened the gate of hell"

The next few weeks will be very dark in the Middle-East...

See Five Planets!

Over the next week we shall have the chance to see 5 planets in our solar system at the same time!

040305_planets_above_02

From Space.com

All five planets that can be visible to the naked eye will appear together in the evening sky later this month in a viewing opportunity that won't be matched for 32 years.

Going in order from West to East, the cast of planetary characters will be Mercury, Venus, Mars, Saturn and Jupiter. All but Mercury are already visible. The winged messenger is the most elusive of the five, being so close to the Sun that it never gets very far above the horizon, and always only near dawn or dusk.

The site also contains a detailed viewers guide. (via telescreen.org)

The Future

As i mentioned in an earlier post, i am debating whether or not to create a new blog that deals solely with the Nokia Series 60 and Symbian OS posts i have been writting.

I have decided to do it! A whole new site based specifically on those intrests. Howver it'll be a while till i have enough time to set it up properly. I don't want to do a rush job on this i want to do it right.

Basically right now i'm in the process of completing my university disertation. At the end of this week, our three week Easter vacation starts and one of these weeks will be devoted to setting up the new site. Perhaps i'll create that banner i was talking about earlier too.

Anyway i'll keep you posted...

I Need A Banner

I think i may design a proper banner for this site. I have always used just the plain text 'tarek speaks crap' which i still think looks kinda cool but perhaps i should invest some time into designing something a bit better. Perhaps something i can re-design the whole site around.

Oh and Tiger has done a huge re-design and has even moved his whole site!!!

Seperate Blog For Nokia Series 60 Stuff?

CLICK HERE TO VISIT MY NEW SITE

Damn i'm getting  hell of alot of traffic and its all down to one thing. No its not my blogging talent its my posts on Nokia Series 60 Software!! Its brought in LOADS of people to the site! I've had loads of e-mails about the software and loads of comments too.

Which brings me to my point...should i create a seperate blog for the Nokia series 60 stuff? I feel this blog is more of a regular blog rather than a technology blog and it might be best to split the two factors. Also it would allow me to concentrate on the few visitor is get who come to read my posts?

Any suggestions?

SPAM Update: The Lawsuits

In a previous post I mentioned some problems SPAM caused. Well I found this on 'A Welsh View':

E-Mail Providers Slam Spammers

Internet service providers are mad as hell and they aren't going to take it anymore.

In a Washington, D.C., press conference Wednesday, four of the biggest e-mail providers -- Microsoft, America Online, EarthLink and Yahoo -- said they are filing lawsuits against what company representatives said are six of the most prolific spam operations.

The lawsuits are among the first legal actions to be filed under the United States' new Can Spam Act.

Heh its about bloody time. I hope they get what they deserve!

Faces Of The Internet: World-Wide Wednesday

Warren Ellis has set up 'World Wide Wednsday' again over at DiePunyHumans. The idea is that people who read his weblog e-mail him their name and photo which he then publishes on his blog for the world to see.

World Wide Wednesday

We did one of these six months ago, but it got eaten by the server crash that led to me moving hosts again, and it's vanished forever.. So we're going to do it again. Bigger and better.

It's Wednesday. I want to see your face.

Ideally, I'm looking for webcam shots and futurephone shots, but I'll take anything so long as it's your face, and you took the photo after you read this. Send your shot, along with your name, to warrene@aol.com.

This is going to run from 12.01am GMT Wednesday (two hours from now), until I get up Thursday morning GMT.

You are not just an anonymous signal shooting through a network of lines and beams. Let the world know you're there, and that the internet is made out of people.

-- Warren Ellis

My pic is already up there (One of the first few i might add). Send him yours...

NOTE: Before i get a whole load of people complaining or back-patting this has nothing to do with my political views...I don't necesarily agree with everything said/implied...I just thought it was funny!

Its Been A While

Well it has been a while hasn't it. Apologies to my tens (And thats being generous) of readers but i have been very busy latley and its going to be a while till i have time to blog daily.

Why?

Well i'm in the middle of completing my final year Disertation a.k.a. 'The Bain Of My Life'. Its the single most important part of my whole degree. My deadline is coming up soon (End of April) and once that is passed i'll have till mid-May to write up a report of roughly 15,000 pages. So basically this ahs been taking up alot of my time.

I'll continue to drop a post or two (and hopefully more) but i just thought i'd let you know...yes YOU.

Nokia 6600 Themes

I've found a great site for Nokia 6600 themes. There are a fair few and some are a bit, shall we say, x-rated so over-18s only!

Oh and the files are password protected...the clue on the site says the password is in the banner. For those of you who can't see the obvious, the password is 'gsmztnawhcs''. Enjoy.

"Blogger Code"

I suppose someone had to create this sometime eh. The Blogger Code.

Damn thats depressing and no, i won't be posting my blogger code, and i don't care what yours is either.

A Proposal Gone Wrong

Imagine this: You plan an elaborate (But VERY cheesy) way of proposing to your girlfriend in front of millions of people. The day comes, you get on one knee and...she runs off!

Well thats what happened to a very unfortunate American who decided to propose to his girlfriend at a recent basketball game...now thats romantic! Somebody tell me what he was thinking!

The apparent proposal came at the end of a halftime contest on the Wizards home court Saturday night:

"The woman was blindfolded, sent out on the court, and told if she could find a local bank's mascot, she would win free Wizards tickets.

As the crowd yelled "hot" and "cold," the woman roamed the court for about 10 seconds....

...The man appeared from the bank mascot's costume, grabbed a microphone and then got down on one knee.

As he began to speak to the woman, she paused and grabbed her face in shock.

Then, as the crowd expected the man to pop question, the woman turned away from the man, and sprinted full speed across the basketball court."

MSNBC

And, of course, the video has found its way on the internet...enjoy.

Nokia 6600 Software Update

I'VE CLOSED COMMENTS HERE NOW. PLEASE GO TO MY NEW SITE

http://www.tarekesber.com

When i first posted about the Nokia 6600 and its software i didn't anticipate all the attention it would get. This site has been flooded with hits reffering from searches for 'Nokis 6600 Software'. I also have received many e-mails about the subject. So here, finally, is an update to that post.

There is loads of software available at the moment for the 60 series phones and much more coming. However the vast majority of these programs cost money. The better sites for these pay-to-use programs are MySymbian and the Nokia Shop. However there is also alot of freeware floating around the net.

What always annoyed me about my 6600 was that the video recoreder only took 9 seconds of video. However a nice bit of software breaks that code and allows you to take longer videos...and it free too. Download it from here

The first piece of software i downloaded was from AgileMobile. It was a programm that enabled my phone to connect to various messanger services (msn messanger, yahoo messnger etc.) called Agile Messanger. This is a free download which makes it a must have for anyone with a series 60 phone. All you need is a GPRS connection with the correct settings to run this program. Also available from the same company are the fun (yet pretty functionless) programs Agile Lie Detector, Agile Pets and Agile Fighter Bluetooth. All are free downloads.

Perhaps the most usefull piece of software i have on my phone right now is 'ReadM', my e-book reader. From the site:

ReadM is a highly configurable reader for electronic books, which could be scaled down to a barebone plain text viewer, but, if necessary, it could be enhanced with quite sophisticated bookmarks system (including highlights and text corrections) and with support for a variety of most popular text and audio formats (including Aportis DOC, TCR, and MP3.)

Basicaslly you can carry round books and music in your phone. This was especially usefull as the 6600 doesn't have an MP3 player built-in! Again this software is free and can be downloaded here.

A problem i had with my 6600 when i first got it was being able to see all the files i had on the phone and memory card, how much memory these took up, how much memory i had free...basically i needed a Nokia equivilent of windows explorer. That is perhaps the best way to decribe 'FExplore'...Windows Explorer for Nokia phones. This too is free software.

Well i hope this qenches your thirst for now. I have more software to try out and review so i shall update the site regularly with 6600 related posts.

New Look

So I have finally given this site as new look. I'm trying a minimalist style and i think its looking ok for now. Its a shame that with the TypePad Account i have i can't write out my own style in html but have to chosse style options from a menu instead. This limits the effects and looks i can choose from.

Change Is Good...

Apparently. Its supposed to be cleansing or something. Turning a page, taking the next step etc.

There has been alot of change in my life the last 2 weeks...

So i have now decided to make changes to this site. I need to clean ou the links, change links to my old pages and put in the new ones. One of my favourite new pages is my new MoBlog aptly named "tarek snaps crap". I'm using a new MoBlog suplier name MoBlogUK which is in its teathing process right now. I'm still gonna use TextAmerica from time to time but its col trying something new.

Over the next few days i'll try and revamp the site with a new look and try and add a new feature or two...if i can be bothered. Anyway enough for now...

DropLoad

Another great idea. From their main site:

"Dropload is a place for you to drop your files off and have them picked up by someone else at a later time. Recipients you specify are sent an email with instructions on how to download the file. Files are removed from the system after 48 hours, regardless if they have been picked up or not. Recipients can be anyone with an email address"

(Updates available here and Downloads available here)

I have a new phone. I love my new phone...and it loves me back. My phone is perfect in every way and i have now found a site that can help make it even better!!

Now my phone is the new Nokia 6600, the latest offering from the Finnish company. It is a 'smart phone'. It connects to the internet, takes videos and pictures and does 101 other fantastic things.

Now there is a whiole bundle of extra software that can be installed on this phone but the problem is I have to pay for it. Que a search for free 6600 software and i find a Mr. Russell Beattie. He has a fantastic blog about various types of technology including a great post on free software for his 6600.

Hope someone out there finds this usefull! (also i'm hoping this will bring in traffic from search engines :D)

Mike Rowe What?

I leave you with this. A 17 year-old boy is being hassled by Microsoft. No its not because Bill Gates likes them young, its his name they have issues with and his web-site.

They have offered the kid 10 bucks for his domain name 'MikeRoweSoft'...he told them where they could shove-it...or something along those lines.

You can donate to his lawyer fund at PayPal (Ah the bastards get another mention), his e-mail address is mikerowesoft@hotmail.com

Thanks to Tiger...now its time to MoBlog...

MoBlogging

I want to try something new tonight (or actually maybe tomorrow day). Instead of doing my usual blog-thing online i want to blog from somewhere else (i.e. not infront of the bloody computer) and see what i come up with.

Advantages: Different perspective as a blogger. Get more personal blogs rather than news and oddities. Can blog thoughts/ideas when they come to me and not have to wait and maybe even foroget it.

Limitations: I can't add links easily. I can't edit too easily. Costs more (i guess). Takes more time to type.

Here goes nothing...

PayPal

PayPal is fucking around with my account. Apparently i have to verify it. To do this is have to fax them my bank statement with proof i have used the account, and they have to charge my acount 2 small sums and i have to verify the exact amount.

WHY?

I have used the account for ages and had no trouble. Never borrowed money from them or anything. I have 2 auctions i have won and cann't bloody pay for. One is over a month late for fucks sake.

In other news...

SPAM: The Internets Annoying Little Cousin

In a recent post I mentioned SPAM e-mails and how 62.7% of e-mails in Decmber 2003 were SPAM.

Today i log onto my campus main site and am greeted by a stroy entitled "Grad-spam: Firms may ignore emailed CVs"

Some companies are now ignoring e-mailed CV's as they have been receiving too many 'SPAM' CV contributions:

Graduates in Bath are being warned not to bombard employers with badly thought out CVs sent via e-mail. New figures have shown that one in three graduate job applications is now dismissed as spam because it has been e-mailed to hundreds of other employers at once in a scattergun approach.

Upadate on School Shooting

Rally to support Dutch 'teacher killer'

Several dozen students held a rally Thursday morning in support of a fellow student arrested for the shooting and killing of teacher Hans van Wieren in a school in The Hague earlier this week.

The students gathered outside Terra College in the morning and placed a large poster with the text "Murat, we love you" on a car window. The group also banged on cars and shouted "We love you Murat" to get their message across.

They told reporters that they were angered by the way the suspect was being portrayed in the media.

"Van Wieren stopped and confronted Murat in every break between classes. Murat tried everything to solve the problem between them, but everyone has a limit," one of the pupils told newspaper De Telegraaf during the rally.

Claiming the suspect had no option but to shoot the teacher, one of the pupils said: "He (the suspect) was one of us and he never even hurt a fly".

The First School Shooting In Holland

The first boy who did this was also 17. In 1999 he injured 5 people at his school, 4 students and a teacher. The boy was of Turkish origin. This bring another parallel to yestardays shooting which took place in a school whos students are mostly of Moroccan and Turkish origins.

Here are some old links:

Dutch student on attempted murder charge

The 17-year old student who opened fire in a school in the southern Dutch town of Veghel has been charged with attempted murder.
The youth, who is being held at a local police station, shot and critically wounded a fellow student at the Leijgraaf school on Monday, and injured three other students and a teacher.
Motives for the attack are still unclear but a brother of one of four students wounded has told police that a long-running family feud was behind the rampage.

The brother, whose name was not released in line with Dutch privacy laws, said that his family had feared an attack like Tuesday's for months and had sought police protection from the 17-year-old suspect back in August, and then again the night before the shooting.

He said the families - both of Turkish origin - had squabbled over a romance between the suspect's sister and a son of the other family.

The suspect's family had just returned from a holiday in Turkey the day before the shootings, he said.

"We asked the police again for protection" the night before the shooting," he said. "We didn't get it."

School shooting in the Netherlands

School Shooting...And Its Not In The US This Time

School shooting stuns Netherlands

A Dutch schoolteacher has died after a student shot him in the head in a school cafeteria. Students of the secondary school in The Hague said a pupil known as a troublemaker shot an economics teacher.

Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende described the shooting as horrific and promised an investigation.

Tuesday's shooting has sparked a national debate about security in schools, although the country has stringent gun control laws.

...The country's first school shooting was five years ago, when a student wounded five people. He was sentenced to five years in prison.

Miami Golf Course Squatter Evicted After 40 Year Stay

Homeless man evicted after 40 years on golf course

A man who lived on a golf course for 40 years was told to leave because some golfers complained that he scared them. Other golfers, however, said Kenny Bethel is harmless and should be allowed to stay at Palmetto Golf Course.

Bethel, 55, first showed up at the golf course after he ran away from home in 1963. He collected and resold stray golf balls, used the club's showers and toilets at night and slept in a sheltered area on the course that housed the showers.

"This course became my job and, later, my home," he said.

For the last nine years, he had been joined by his wife Francis, 43. They have since relocated to a space under a nearby bridge.

62.7% Of Global Emails Sent During December Were Spam

Will I ever check my mail and have no SPAM...guess not:

Worsening spam epidemic chokes the net

17:35 13 January 04

NewScientist.com news service
The scourge of junk email reached new proportions at the end of 2003 with nearly two out of every three messages sent worldwide being an unwanted advertisement.

The latest statistics from UK-based email filtering company MessageLabs indicate that 62.7 per cent of all global emails sent during December were spam. The company scanned over 463 million messages. In November the figure was 55.1 percent and in October 50.5 percent. In some countries, for example Australia, more than two thirds of all December messages were junk.

Mark Sunner, MessageLabs' chief technical officer, says this upward trend may soon change the way email is used altogether. "By the mid-point of 2005 email without advanced filtering is going to be almost unusable," he told New Scientist.

Spam email chokes millions of inboxes every day with offers for everything from stationary to pornography. Spammers are also using ever more sophisticated tricks to foil the filters employed by ISPs and end users to catch spam.

One of the latest methods involves including random text written in white on a white background. This is invisible to most recipients, but confuses filters that look for typical spam text.

Britains Worst Serial Killer Takes Another Life - His Own

Harold Shipman, Britains worst serail killer, was found hanging from the window of his cell early yestarday morning. Over 23 years he is suspected of claiming at least 215 lives. He had never shown remorse for the killing and had never confessed to them.

Relatives of his victims have reacted angrily to the news that the former GP had taken "The easy way out". He took with him to his grave the secrets that surrounded his killings of mostly middle-aged and elderly women in his care with injections of diamorphine.

An independent inquiry into Shipmans death has begun today at Wakefield Prison where he was held. A Senior member of the Prison Officers' Accosiation has already said that no blame should be attached to prison staff over the Suicide.
